Okanagan Wineries

The Okanagan valley is likely best known for its diverse varieties of award-winning wines. Located on the top of the dormant Mt Boucherie are several of West Kelownas wineries. After years of erosion to the mountain’s rocky surface, a mix of sandy loam, clay, and limestone with mineral-rich deposits emerged, creating a fabulous medium for growing the delicious grapes that make up the notable wines grown in the Westside. In the mid 20th century, the industry took flight when the Steward family began growing grapes at what is now known as Quail’s Gate. Soon after, the original Mission Hill opened its doors and now with more than 13 established wineries, West Kelowna is recognized as a world-class wine region.

Landmarks on the Westside

West Kelowna is a beautiful town with many different geological and volcanic landmarks that breathe both beauty and history into the city. To name a few, Mt. Boucherie is a dormant volcano known for its several blocks of dacite, streams of ancient lava flow, and sandstone cavities and Rose Valley Regional Park is a sight worth seeing with several caves that are thought to have formed as a result of large air bubbles in the lava that once passed through. Other notable West Kelowna views to take in include Hwy97/Glenrosa Road Overpass that show fossil tree trunks and thin coal seams in the bedrock, or Glencanyon Regional Park where the glacial meltwater has dramatically cut a 1200 meter deep canyon.
